More Reasons why Boston sucks

While Natty made a great post on why Boston sucks I would like to add a few more (this is not a full list – a full list of why Boston sucks would take months to compile and days to read).

  • The Big Dig. Since Boston has the worst traffic problems I’ve ever seen in any city (see next point) some genius decided it would be a good idea to reroute the interstate to go under the city. The project was estimated to cost 2.8 billion dollars. 20 years later, 14.6 billion dollars have been spent – some of it coming from federal funds! You would think with all the nerds they have across the river in Cambridge they would be able to construct this thing without a hitch but leaks have been found all over the tunnel and two deaths have occured from ceiling collapses in 2006. Thanks a lot Boston – now I can’t even drive past you on the Interstate without my life being in danger.
  • Impossible to navigate. Boston’s streets were made before automobiles and if you visited today you would think that they haven’t updated them since. Pretty much every road in Boston is a one way street. That would be fine except for the fact none of the roads are straight or run parallel. Look at this street map. Now concider that those streets are one way and their direction are seemingly selected at random. Do they not have “blocks” up there in Mass?
  • Red Sox. Look – The Yankees suck and the Red Sox suck. They both are freaking awful and I am sick of hearing about it and your lame rivalry. Boston loses extra points for even pretending its on the same level as New York City in anything.

How could Boston recover?

The only thing cool thing Boston has ever done was the Boston Tea Party. A bunch of Bostonians, Samuel Adams included, Jack Bauered there way onto a boat and pulled £10,000 of tea out of the hull and into the harbor. Even then, they overreacted and Bostonian Benjamin Franklin offered to repay the damages (flip flopper). It was still pretty cool though and the tea flowed on the shore for weeks. Too bad that was back when we were a different country. Its been like 230 years guys – what have you done for me lately? If you could do something cool like that without acting like a bunch of idiots then you could redeem yourself.

  2. Hey guys

    I love your website!

I thought there were 6 contributing writers for hectorhector.com, how come only 2 of you have written more than one post?

  3. As a recent transplant to Massachusetts, let me add a few things.
    - Want to do construction? Hire this off duty cop. What does the cop do? Slows down construction by standing around BSing with the workers. Infuriating.
    - No happy hours. Hell, no decent bars. Liberty? Not if the puritans don’t like it.
    - The roads would be slightly more navigable if there were … I don’t know … street signs! (If you don’t know where you are, maybe you shouldn’t be here.)
    - Beautiful, huge reservoirs … that you can’t swim, boat, or walk too close too.
    - The T. Just because it’s the oldest subway system, doesn’t mean it has to be the crappiest.
I could go on, but I think the case has been made.

  5. I’ve been stuck in the hell known as Boston for seven years now…thankfully, the time for escape is near. My observations about this pile of crap city? Let’s start with the Mayor, or shall I call him Mushmouth. Instead of enforcing rules this guy cuts ribbons, hands out awards for pretty gardens and talks about the Red Sohx. How about making sure the red lights are timed properly or instituting alternate side of the street parking so people can actually DRIVE their cars down a clear street after 4 inches of snow. Moron. But hey, Dave Jones over in JP sure has a pretty garden!
Let’s talk about the uniform for male and female Massholeans that consists of a Patriots jersey (size XL) and a Red Sox hat…The XL fits the big fat gut, again male or female, and there always seems to be super
skinny pair of legs attached. What’s with the ginormously proportioned upper bodies? It isn’t muscle!
Consistent among all Bostonians is the major bug they have up their ass about New York. Get over it. There’s no comparison. You are a tiny, dirty little city with a bunch of nasty, rude people either completely lacking in any social graces or, in the alternative, you have innacurately deemed yourselves as “Blue Bloods”…get over yourselves. When I moved here, someone actually scoffed at me for not knowing who a “Saltonstall” is…who the fuck cares?! Do they know who I am? Stick it Boston and while you’re at it, learn to drive, speak properly, get over your “little man” complex with NY, wash your nasty Sox hats and come to terms with the fact that there are many outstanding universities operating in the United States.

    GET ME OUT OF HERE!

  6. ok guys.. honestly, You’re all hicks with nothing better to do then talk trash about one of the greatest cities in the world. Boston has more culture and history then every other state combine. You can’t even say go colts, they suck, the yankees suck.. the knicks suck.. the islanders and rangers suck. so hop off. Everyone in the country hates boston teams because they are good, and have all had success. If you were smart you wouldnt try driving in boston, you’d walk, like normal people.
And hey, steve cleveland, you city has one thing, the rock and roll hall of fame, so how do you have any right saying that boston isnt a good city? idiot. And what kind of comment is the weather sucks? what about seattle? do you hate seattle cus it rains all the time? or Las vegas because its really hot and dry? thats the most retarted thing i’ve ever heard. clown.
New york sucks, its by far more dirty then boston.

You guys need some lifes, Boston is the only place on earth to be.

  7. OMG!
    I love this rant!
because I, too, hate this horrible citysore on a bog, “Bahstan”…

Been here since 98, and still CAN NOT LOVE boston.
    Cruelly deformed roads.
    Crueler drivers.
Cold winters that last 6 months.
Colder hearts of the people, that last forever.
Small, insular attitude to the remainder of Earth.
Awful blueblood attitude, especially the ones with cash.
No acceptance of ‘outsiders’ of any kind.

Sorry, your clean, crime free city has a lot of segregated crime, dirt, corruption, and denial.

    Still, Fenway is extremely cool…

Yes, Virginia, I too taught at Harvard for 2 years (like so many others) and to this day it so cracks me up to remember being told by my chief “Well phil, you were good enough to teach here, but not train here.”

Ha ha. Fuck you (but i still love the ol’ guy).

    Listen folks:

If a snowstorm of 12 inches can
stop traffic for 7 hours in a 20 mile radius, what do you think will happen if a hurricane hits?
    Peace, love, and understanding???

Point made. All the above about Boston is right on.
It remains a small, cruel, overpriced city.

  9. The reason I hate Boston the most is that they think they are so “all that” that they do not have to advertise or sell themselves as a tourist destination the way other cities have to. Now some of those “other cities” are having all sorts of success selling themselves as Great tourist destinations, while dear old Boston is lagging behind now. That’s what they get for being so cocky and overconfident. If Boston were so smart, they would know that you must constantly sell your self as a great tourist destination to succeed with it. Maybe this will humble the big shots.

  10. i take it many of you are not from New England…? possibly somewhere west of the mississippi or south of the mason-dixon?

  19. Boston people are the nastiest, rudest people I have met in a while and have horrible accents to go with it. I go to school there (longing to transfer) and the only nice people are the ones that are locals and also hate Boston. Just look at Kevin, typical shitty Bostonian. You Bahstonian need to get a life instead of sports and worrying about the Red Sux and learn how to drive. The weather is awful in the fall and winter and the city is a shithole and on top of that it is so expensive to live. Avoid at all costs

  25. simply look at the posts of the Bostonians on this site. Clearly shows the stupidity of an extraordinary percentage of people that live in the area.

The area has some redeeming qualities if it wasn’t poisoned by the biggest assholes I have ever met in my life.

Having lived all over the US and traveled extensively throughout Europe, the Boston area takes the cake for the rudest people anywhere.

  26. wow. the posts from other people from boston are evry embarrassing. i think its pretty ignorant to categorize every single person from a city of just over 500k. i was born and raised in boston. ive been in san diego because of the military for 3 years. i miss boston more than anything. its home. its great.

as a black man i want to be clear on this:
BOSTON IS NOT A RACIST CITY. san diego in my opinion has been more racist. ive heard more comments about being black here than i have anywhere else.

boston has such a diverse population that i think youre going to hear any culture or ethnicity talk smack about each other on any given day. its all in good fun, ive never seen a fight just because someone is different. with such a diverse city its only going to happen.

i read almost every comment here. some are so stupid. these things need to be said:
among bigger cities boston has one of the lowest crime rates. google it.
the 4 seasons are awesome. there also are no devastating wildfires, tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes etc there
people can be opinionated in boston but honestly thats what i miss. i cant stand these wishy washy southern californian people.
the public transportation in the city is way above average. name one big city that doesnt have issues one in a while. dare you
the food. you can have anything! cant get any decent seafood out here….nevermind chinese food

boston is the only place to be

    Impossible to navigate
Rudest people I have ever met
    Absolutely nothing to do
    Terrible Weather
Ugliest Major City in the country
Most insular place I have ever been
    Utterly Corrupt Government
    Worst Drivers in the nation
    Unattractive populace
And the best part is that they are so arrogant about their city as if there was something good about it.

EVERYONE I know from the west coast hates it here. I cannot wait to go home.

  29. 1) Why is everyone so addicted to drugs here. I am currently at Northeastern University doing my masters as 7 out of every 10 student are taking drugs. Why is this ? Arent you guys happy with your life ? Dont you realize that you are only making it worst by taking drugs ?

    2) Why is everyone soooooooo sex crazy here? Not only the guys but even the girls are wiling to do just anything for having sex. They would even run naked on the streets. Its seems that my college has a cultural thing that they do every year by running naked on the streets. Check the videos out on youtube. Fucking soooooooo sick. LIFE IS SOOOO EMPTY. Why cant they have just one partner. Have sex with just one person be faithful and loyal.

    3) I know there is racism here coz white ppl are just soo proud of their skin color. I know i am brown but what can i do if god made me that way.

    4) Fucking tattoos on their bodies, body piercing, drug taking, sex, racism and alcohol…………you know you guys are like animals. NOOOOO even worst. Name me one place in USA where i can find human beings. I would go there.

  30. BOSTON FUCKING SUCKS! The most segregated city. Blacks (like Alex) dont now what the other parts of city or suburbs are like. It is a different world.. San Diego doent have much black so, when there is a news involving blacks, it tends to be exaggerated. And of course I hate the fucking boston dirvers.. fucking redsox fans…I hate them all..

These ppl are bunch of pompous butts and I agree with all the above comment as to why I hate fucking boston!! Here in PC, FL it’s fucking boston!!! Having to deal with the likes them makes my stomach turn, it’s at the supermarket, at the major stores, at church, at the feakin’ red light for crying out loud, why me Lord???

  33. I’m orginally from Chicago but due to certain circumtances I’ve lived in Bston 4 years. There’s good…and bad. First off the good. Boston MBTA is nice, and safe. You can feel safe in boston wheras in other cities not so much. Very educated people… Red Sox games are fun. The bad side? Well racism. White people, and black people thrive. White people are scared to talk crap about black people because they have become somewhat of a majority and they coexist. But the low population of every other ethnicity has caused blacks and whites to gang on everyone else. I know this for a fact. The weather is unpredictable but who cares? No offense but there isn’t that many good looking girls here, the ones who are only like white guys, or black guys. Assholes period. I’ve become somewhat of an asshole living here so long. Whenever I visit chicago I feel like a douchebag. Many bostonians have fun by being asshole to not only others but themselves… Can’t have fun without drugs and/or alcohol. It drives so many people. People in boston tend to stay in boston, it seems like everyone knows everyone and if your not from there your an outsider. The streets are just plain garbage, I’ve never seen so many potholes ever and I can’t get across the street in a car without taking a half hour detour. The nightlife? Clubs? Garbage period. Plus most resturants and shops close by 8 or 9 everywhere. It is very expensive to live here and a lot of people have money. Which is probably why so many people r so ignorant. Talking about there masters degrees, beach houses, and maids. People from boston don’t leave new england for some reason, oh so your going on vacation? Ya up o maine, or south carolina, or connecticut. Yah that’s some vacation people. The best is “down the cape” haha. I don’t hate boston I guess. But it does suck, I don’t like it, and I’m moving next year.

  35. I’m a Boston native, don’t live there anymore thank god. And I will be more than happy to express the plain fact that bostonians have to come to terms with: New York is a far better city than Boston. Call me a traitor, I don’t give a damn, it’s not my opinion, it’s just the simple truth.

    Boston vs. NYC

    27 Jul 09 at 12:50 pm

  36. Hmm..after reading these comments I can really see how people think Boston sucks..But I guess when you single out a city, it’s very easy to find the many ways it can suck

Miami..Too hot..no waves, lots of violence

New York…annoying accents (think we’re the only ones?), as many people as there are roaches

    San Diego…pollution, too expensive

get my point? And hey some of the people may be cold..it’s a cultural thing..The parents went to Portugal once and mom said hello to a woman only to get bitched out. If you walk by me in Boston and I don’t say hi don’t be a bitch about it, you’re not at home anymore.

But seriously..I love Boston. It still has that colonial feel..even in the midst of a typical American city. A lot of our pride comes from not having to prove ourselves as a modern metropolitan paradise..we’re a well established city..we know our roots and we’re happy with our history.

    Peace love, and fuck Cheers.

  39. I am finally making my escape early next year after living here for twelve miserable years. Its only when you travel to other cities in America and come back to beanbag town that you realize how truly fucked up this place is. For a young person trying to get a start in life this is one of the worst cities because you are overcharged for practically everything. There is a laundry list of things that suck about Boston but in the end it comes down to the people. They truly are some of the rudest, most arrogant and insular people you will ever meet. The cabs of course are famous for ripping tourists and locals off alike. The rental housing situation is just as bad as ever and people pay more for less and cant complain. its one of those places that you can endure for a while but when you see the rest of the country you realize you are getting royally fucked just to like in a cultural city that costs more because its fuckin old and decrepit. It is a horrible place that tends to make people madder and sadder by the day and its a place you can go into debt in very very quickly. Fuck the culture, fuck the history, build a new fucking ballpark and knock that pile of shit. What good is it living somewhere where people are this mean and there isin’t an ounce of goodwill. Life is too short. The day my plane takes off from logan for good will be a great day and i wont come back (even to visit)

  40. Unless your independently wealthy or live with your parents (like a lot of massholians) until your 35 you simply cant get anywhere or save a dime in this douchebag town. Anytime i return to Boston i am pissed off and immediately know i am home when i return to that piece of shit Logan airport. Lately i have taken the silverline home as i have grown tired of getting constantly ripped off by Haitan cabdrivers who don’t speak English. Bostonians tend to have a unplesant and inbred arrogance and attitude towards their overpriced city and no matter how long you have lived here (if your not born here) you will always remain a outsider because locals are incredibly unfriendly and mean-spirited. this place sucks worse then a hooker on weekends. I too am on the verge of leaving and am counting the days

  41. I’m from a city outside of Boston, but i love Boston. it’s beautiful in the fall, you know when the leaves start to change, and school starts. i love Massachusetts in general. I love that we have four seasons. I’m a huge fan of the Revs. I love the Pats, the Red Soxs, & the Celtics. I LOVE the bruins. There are so many celebrities that came from Boston. like Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Mark Wahlberg, & my favorite, Denis Leary. We were also the first state to legalize sex-marriage. I think that’s amazing. Go us :) . Deval Patrick, second BLACK state cheif executive. We’re not racist here. I know i wasn’t raised that way. Boston is also the third greenest state. Our driving. I know everyone calls us the “massholes”, but really get over it. it’s like the saying ” if you stand the heat, get out of the kitchen”. If you have a problem with driving in Boston, then get out of Boston. Or do what us Bostonians do, Walkkk. We have some much history here in Massachusetts. Just to name a few, Boston Tea Party, Salem Witch Trails, Freedom Trails? Recall any of them? Our colleges are great. BU? Harvard? Tufts? Now let’s go back to Boston, Beacon Hill? Fanueil Hall? Newbury Street? All Highlights of Boston.

& like someone else said, Every town, cities, and state has their own problems. :)

  42. To be honest most of that stuff that you mentioned is totally irrelevant. Boston attracts not only the richest students in America but in the world. The allows for a constant supply of renters for the over zealous and famously greedy Boston landlords. This drives up the price of rent for everyone else in Boston (aka the ordinary working people and students who actually work). Celebrity’s or sports teams don’t pay my bills and in the fact the latter are a bunch of rip off merchants overcharging for sports. History and culture are irrelevant and in fact because the city is so fucking old its takes forever to get anything done (aka the big dig). Basically you can sum this town up in 3 sentences. Freeze your ass off in winter. Sweat your ass off in summer and pay your ass off all year long for the privilege of living here. Go figure

  43. I spent the spring and summer in Boston this year. What a horrible town. Why is everyone in Boston so rude? They are so Incredibly rude it is like there is something wrong with them. Also they won’t accept an out of state drivers licence as id to get into a bar. After 10pm all the retaurants shut (you can get a drink but you can’t get food). What a horrible shit hole.

  47. I once dated a Masshole, and he was just that. He lived in Boston for 18/21 years of his life. He then moved to where I live, and at first everything was great. Then, about a month into the horrible relationship, I realized how rude, self-centered, and arrogant he was. PEOPLE FROM BOSTON CAN NEVER SHUT UP ABOUT BOSTON. That’s the main point I can make. No matter how much I told him I didn’t want to hear about that stupid place, he would rant for 20-30 minutes about how great of a place it is. Eventually I had to dump him. He truly showed me what the people of Boston were like…rude, liars, self-centered Massholes, and disgusting. It sucks that I had to get such a bad idea of Boston from him, but what I’ve read from here pretty much confirmed my suspicions.

  48. I found this site by googling “I hate living in Boston,” and have enjoyed reading the posts. I especially appreciated that it began in 2007 and continued right up through yesterday! I grew up here, just outside of the Boston area and have lived in Cambridge for about 10 years now, with 3 years in San Diego in between. I have to say, as I felt before I moved to San Diego, I really hate it here, I find I get very depressed or just hopeless. People are rude and mean, and I also find that because of the congestion, I don’t venture too far from here even though I have a car. Having to navigate through all the traffic just to get the hell out of here has become a psychological deterrent. Same thing happened to me before. When I lived outside of the city, I used to go everywhere. So in essence, I feel trapped and imprisoned in these dreary cities of Cambridge and Boston. I’ve lost interest in going anywhere. And the politics? Boston is THE most corrupt city in the country. Boston and Cambridge are very difficult places to live if you’re a good, fun-loving, friendly, and sensitive person. If you don’t already live here, don’t come here, and if you have a chance to get out, go! I wish I didn’t move back but my mother is ill and I had to come back. I actually hope to be able to not only move out of this city but out of the country one day. But if I had my druthers, and especially didn’t mind the commute, I’d move to Lowell. Such a wonderfully friendly and community minded city, which promises to get even better…

  49. wow, so I’m not the only one who got inconsoleably depressed after moving to the area (from NYC). I lived in Quincy for a year ( good GOD what I wouldn’t give to get that year of my life back). What a fucking SHIT HOLE. My boyfriend and I (he’s the reason I moved here) just moved to the North End. It’s better – vastly – than Quincy. But, that isn’t saying much.lol. It’s too small, it makes NO SENSE to navigate. MASSHOLES ARE THE RUDEST FUCKOING PEOPLE I HAVE EVER MET!! There is a general sense of unwelcome to outsiders….I could go on. This city fails.

  50. let me also add, I NEVER bought into the whole retarded NYC/Boston rivalry…in fact, I STILL don’t. Hell, I moved here FROM NYC so why would I.I don’t even watch sports. I always like visiting Boston and was open to it….until I lived here. Being from NY doesn’t automatically mean that I have an issue with Boston or with Bostonians. You all brought it on yourselves by acting like douchebags.

  54. I absolutely agree with everyone that Boston sucks for all of the reasons above.

That said, does anyone have any recommendations for places here that don’t suck, bar-wise or music-wise?

I don’t know of any hangout in Boston that has character, unless by character you mean a bunch of fat dumbasses watching the Sox and acting like fawking cawks. Is there any place with a mixed crowd/good music/interesting people?

  55. AT Northeastern, Boson all people want is sex and drugs. I see every FUCKING thursday, friday and saturday nights they party like hell call girls over and get drunk and have a gang bang. Thats right the party ends with a big bang. Sometime i hear the girl scream like as if a group of guys have gagged her and forcing bondage sex on her. I have even seen people having sex with their windows open. Women in Boston especially students from Northeastern and Boston University and like sluts. I wonder how many penises have they gotten inserted into their vagina. How many FUCKING people will u guys have sex with. I mean arent u guys tired of it ?? Arent u guys tired of partying and having sex all night long every FUCKING weekends. U girls move from one boyfriend to another without any shame putting your body on the line. U guys suck BIG TIME !!!!! Its the students of Boston that are making this place a lot worst than what it is. FUCKING STUDENTS…….GO FUCK URSELF !!!!!!

    Northeastern University students sucks

    15 Nov 09 at 1:03 am

  56. I must agree with the person above me. I live just opposite to Northeastern University and i know all students care about is having sex and fucking each other. I havent been around US but is this the case everywhere or is it just in Boston ? My neighbours partyied all night last weekend. It was 2 am and they still didnt stop. After that i started people moan loudly. I just couldnt sleep with that kind of noise. I had to call the police, fuck those motherfuckers. Horny bastards. I wished if the police could cut the penises of all of them so they could never have sex again. The primary reason of to party is sex i believe. party and fun is just like a bait to girls in which they are lured in. The girls are stupid really like they feel “its ok”. How can this be ok when you are so stupid to be friends with people who just want to fuck you and use your body u bitches. Get some life and stop this. Fuck BOSTON culture. Fuck those students

  57. It’s is hysterically funny listening to you people rip Boston as a city. I went to college there in Chestnut Hill at Boston college, and stayed there for 4 more years after graduation working for Fidelity Investments in the World Trade Center on the Waterfront in Southie before moving back to N.C. I agree the rents were VERY expensive, and the weather in the winter was tough to handle, but I loved my time there. The food is amazing and there’s always something to do in that city.
Now with regards to the racism, the main reason why it exists is because Boston historically had one of the poorest white populations of any major city. South Boston was once one of the largest white Irish Ghettos in the country. The same as Hell’s kitchen in NY. When the blacks moved into those neighborhoods, you had 2 seperate racial groups that are vying for the same federal assistance and competiting in narcotics sales, which happens in poor communities. Then racial tension explodes. It’s the same reason that blacks and hispanics don’t get along in Los Angeles, but for all the subtle racism in Boston, there is not a high rate of interracial violent crime at all like you have in LA, Baltimore, and other major cities. Baltimore is just a free for all where blacks attack whites daily.
I live in Raleigh NC where you figured there would be a lot of racism. However, I can honestly say that black folks down South are far more polite and respectful than they are in Boston. I also noticed there wasn’t much interracial dating up north either, and it’s completely normal here in the South.

Seriously you little prick, this fuckin town sucks ass.You are defending it as a child. When you grow up,then you are welcome to express your opinions.Perhaps by that time you will have come to recognize what a shithole it truly is.The liberals and like-minded fools have ruined this state, along with the rest of the country, which is truly shameful given that this the heart of a once great cuntrys history.Being born here has biased your view, but in time(and with experience)you too will start to see whats going on.Obviously you no longer live here,so take some time to examine your current area, then compare and contrast the two-you will then start to understand just how much of a shithole this place is.

  65. I’m a 27-year-old Bostonian, and I agree and disagree with many statements made on this blog.

Firstly, I would like to point out that there is nothing more logically invalid than arguments constructed from generalization. Let me explain.

There are more than enough good-hearted people here in Boston, and there are more than enough douchbags. No matter where you go, when you converge with one, you have to keep it moving. I’ve been to New York plenty of times and had run-ins with tough guys and blockheads. It’s all good.

    Why?

Because even a clam-chowder-fed Red Sox fan like myself would be the last person to say NYC sucks.

    Are you kidding?

New York is the shit! Why?

It’s simple: NYC has an energy that is truly unmatched and impossible to duplicate. NYC is a living monster, with kind eyes, bad breath, and an uneven psychological temperament. But that’s why it such an amazing city, which continues to attract people. People want to feel that energy.

I want to feel that energy, which is why I’m moving in a year or so. I’m saving at least 20k and breaking for Gotham.

    wish me luck…

  66. WOW! I am so happy to have fellow human beings who agree with me on this one! I really hate Boston! I didn’t want to move here…. (From New Orleans!) Why is everybody in such a bad mood… must be the awful weather! I can’t wait to move. Hopefully, more job opportunities will open up down south! Luuuuuvvvvv the web site! Keep it up!

  67. I intensely hate Boston and even though I have a high paying job here and the employment market sucks I have just given notice at my job and cannot wait to be forever rid of Boston. The people here largely have not read or traveled. They have no sense of humor and think working 12+ hours a day is the way to get ahead in life. It’s because they have no sense of self or need for personal time that they work so much. The entire city is very underwhelming, it gets boring after a single day’s tour.

The weather sucks year round, the winter is too long and summer too humid. Everything is too expensive, people think being uptight and cynical every moment of every day is some how funny or cute. Yes I have met a few great people here but they are awash in a sea of morons and assholes. This is the most overrated city in America. Anyone who says they love Boston is instantly an idiot to me and not worth a second of my time.

  68. Boston is a tribal place. If you’re born there, there’s a chance you’ll come to ardently believe it is the center of the universe. No exposure to reality will dislodge this cherished belief.

If you’re a transplant, there’s a 99% chance you’ll come to recognize it for what it is, and get the hell out as soon as you can.

In my time there, I met a few nice people, but they were certainly a minority.

They will be informed in advance before I figure out the proper Wampanaog incantation that will conjure up a tidal surge that levels everything east of Worcester. Every masshole will be dragged out to fatten all those tasty Lobsters. Mmmmmm. Lobster.

  69. Damn it looks like a lot of people hate Boston. When you google search for “city name rude people”, you get far more results for Boston than for any other major city. That’s got to be saying something.

I’ve had the misfortune of working with a team of Bostonians once a long while ago. I have never been treated worse in my entire life. Not only were they all incredibly self-centered and truly awful people, they really felt superior for no good reason. My manager was a completely incompetent passive-aggressive prick who made my work hours a living hell. Another Masshole teammate, who already had a longtime girlfriend, spent the entire time trying to get into a female teammate’s pants. She had a fiance.

The only satisfaction I get from thinking about this experience is that I’ve since moved on to bigger and better things, while they are stuck there working on their shitty jobs, learning worthless skills, getting paid next to nothing, working overtime, getting fat, becoming bald, and being fucking miserable. I say leave them to their pathetic and awful lives. I’m staying the fuck away from Boston.

  70. I have to admit a few things: “The Departed” was a badass movie; but “The Godfather” was better. Fenway is pretty cool; but Wrigley is much cozier, has much nicer fans, easy public transportation, great restaurants, and is in a beautiful area. The celtics blow this year, and the Lakers are 3-0 in the two teams’ last 3 games and won the title. The red sox were a disaster this year, and the Yankees won the title. The patriots can have Tom Brady if they want; Peyton got to the Super Bowl. And bout boston’s history; go to philly. You get to see the historical landmarks and Rocky. Fuck boston. They are New York’s Napoleonic little bitch brother

  73. I live here now. I hate it. Sometimes when I drive down storrow or memorial, i imagine myself as a 50 story, city-destroying robot that takes big metal shits on this ridiculous city and leaves it in flames.

honestly you know you have a weird sort of fetish for new york when you chant “Yankees suck!” AT A CELTICS PLAYOFF GAME. THEY WEREN”T EVEN PLAYING THE KNICKS.

I recently stopped using the T, and i noticed that i don’t get sick anymore.

by the way, the gentleman that mentioned that the salem which trials were a source of historical pride, well that’s fantastic, you are aware that witches have never existed, so basically a bunch of bostonians killed women for being able to swim and tie their shoes.

  74. I left Boston over 2 years ago, and I still haven’t morphed back into the normal human being I once was. Living in that disgusting place fucked up every single person I knew at the time.

I have never seen such a gigantic collection of assholes. Boston truly does take the cake.

My last girlfriend told me that she’s “never heard of anyone hating a city” like I hated Boston. I am quite proud of that.

Oh, and yes, I’m highly educated (Ph.D. MIT), and yes, I am extremely liberal (currently living in California, which is ACTUALLY NICE).

And as an educated, extremely liberal person…I am completely and 100% disgusted with what I saw during the 7 years I lived in Boston. I hope the place falls off the map.

  75. Wow! I was born and raised on the south shore and I can agree about the snobby miserable people in Boston. However I have traveled the entire country and have gotten more woman than I can shake a stick at with the way we talk so you cant go there. Every one in Boston are not from Boston and yes the mayor is in a permanent guaranteed position like kennedy was and should go away. Boston has the best of the best location. You have north of us New Hampshire, vermont , maine,to the south cape cod ,rhode island ,to the east marthas vinyard etc. One thing is for shoe is the people who are rich they got it from their parents and were given a silver spoon. The middle class are pissed because they were brainwashed that the union was going to take care of them. So Im torn I have lived in the south and people love yah and here my friend from school will knock you out if you catch him on a bad day. Dont blame the city blame the kennedys and the cold god less democrats.

  76. If you think Boston is bad, then you need to know the rest of Mass isn’t much better. Things that are against the law in Massachusetts:

    1. Being positive.
    2. Renting a decent apartment for a good price.
    3. Being friendly.
    4. Having a good accent.
    5. Being pleasant.
    6. Public transportation that arrives on time.
    7. Being well-traveled.
    8. Having a sense of humor.
    9. Being socially accepting of individuals on a personal level, not on a political level.
    10. Being likable.

Seriously, anyone considering moving to this place from somewhere else should really think twice. The majority of transplants leave bitterly regreting the time wasted in Mass. Those that don’t leave degenerate into Massholes and end up hating themselves, other people, and life in general.

  77. These posts made me sad. I have lived in Boston my entire life, and have always had this ache to leave. However, I am afraid, not of other places not being safe, but of being an outsider. Growing up here, it has been difficult to make friends. All of my high school friends live in either New York or San Francisco. The job market isn’t good and I just got out of school. I have a job here but can’t find one in NY or San Fran and these are the only places where people I know live. At this point, all of my friends are actually transplants from out of state. They are wonderful and different, and it’s strange to think that the people I’m closest to, my friends for years now, are people I met in college and grad school who aren’t from the area.
Is it as hard to make friends in other cities as it is in Boston? Frankly I AM miserable. The winters are horrible, and the rudeness is worse. I can be rude myself but it’s not in my nature, it’s reaction to people cutting me off in traffic, nearly slamming my car, and then having the nerve to flip me off. Or nearly being run over in crosswalks only to have the drivers roll down their windows to flip me off, spit on the ground or ream me out. This has been the norm, and my fear of going anywhere else is what if I’m just as unhappy but then lonely on top of it? Then I would move back, more defeated than when I left. This area is pretty terrible, I am a part of the culture but don’t understand why it is the way it is, and desperately want to move. Unless the job market improves, it is looking more and more like moving will be through higher education, and California looks like heaven. Is it easier to make friends there?

  78. Boston is the WORST city in the U.S. Where else can you say hello only to be snubbed by snobs. The only thing that matters here is money, the type of clothes you wear and status. Massholes are everywhere. God, I hated it there and am so happy to be out. I would rather make $9/hour is some rural nowhere than make $80,000 a year in that God forsaken, rude, miserable hellhole.

  79. The first thing to notice about these posts (except for the handful who would like to say Boston isn’t really that bad) is the lucidity they all display. It doesn’t take years (Ive been stuck here for 6 and have another to go) to get the picture. If you are looking for a vibrant, colorful city full of interesting activity and a sense of the possibilities of this short life, you have REALLY made a fucking wrong turn if you have ended up here. Boston/ Cambridge is the most irredeemably boring, sour, and sullen “city” under the creation sun. My friends warned me long before I moved that everyone here was miserable, that no one had a stray thought that wasn’t directly related to career track or social status –and still, of course, all of them struggling, and thus frustrated to the Nth degree and blisteringly defensive– but did I believe them? The fact that the weather is ghastly (four month heat wave, six month deep freeze, and two long rainstorms is what passes for seasons) is nothing compared to the embedded (as in in-grown nail) culture that basically sets the quest for professional status as a life-long punishment for having been born. You might think I’m exaggerating, but I’m not. Leaving aside the blue-collar stratum –I can’t stand the accent either, but I would rather kiss a Pats fan on the lips than have to share a day with the typical grad student/ professional from this city, balling up his or her little fists and shrieking “I’ve been writing code in this little room with the blinds drawn for twelve years… I should be the happiest person in the world!” The people of this city have an active hostility to anything enjoyed for its own sake– believe me, its true. They would rather stay home and masturbate with a copy of their academic record on the monitor.

Two words: Amy Bishop. When her lawyer came to see her for the first time, as you might have read, she managed to turn the conversation to scores she had gotten on IQ tests in the recent past. If you can sum up this city more succinctly I’d like to hear it.

For God’s sake don’t move here! You have so much to live for!
